In a recent operation conducted by the State Environmental Institute (Inea), an individual was detained in the city of Saquarema due to illegal mineral extraction activities. The action, carried out last Wednesday, September 10, began after a tip-off. The suspect was taken to the 124th Police Precinct (Saquarema) for questioning.

During the inspection on Rua Dr. Roberto Keli, in the Bacaxá neighborhood, authorities confirmed the deforestation of an area of approximately three hectares of the Atlantic Forest. Additionally, the practice of mineral extraction without the required environmental license was verified. The machinery used in the extraction was seized, and the person responsible for the land was fined. The penalty for environmental crimes can result in a fine ranging from R$ 400,000 to R$ 1 million.

The State Secretary of Environment and Sustainability, Bernardo Rossi, emphasized the importance of public cooperation to curb criminal actions that threaten local fauna, flora, water resources, and biodiversity. He also pointed out that illegal land extraction causes negative environmental impacts, such as deforestation, erosion, and river siltation. Reports of environmental crimes can be made through the Linha Verde channel or the "Disque Denúncia Rio" app.
